Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge offers several ways to channel your inner Star Wars nerd. I am very much one of those Star Wars nerds. Outside of the major attractions in Rise of the Resistance and Smuggler’s Run you can immerse yourself in Star Wars in other ways such as building your own droid at the Droid Depot or crafting your very own lightsaber!

For both droid and lightsaber building you do need to book advanced reservations beginning up to 60 days in advance currently. Both experiences also require a credit card on file to reserve the experience. If you do not show up you will be charged a no show fee. I did participate in building my lightsaber during the covid pandemic so my experience may vary from those prior or after the pandemic.

Building a lightsaber in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is no cheap experience either. The lightsaber itself costs $219 not including tax (price increased April 2021). When you arrive and check in the friendly Batuans called gatherers will offer a hilt clip or hilt stand for an additional fee. I did not purchase the add ons.

Upon checking in at the highly secretive workshop within the Black Spire Outpost on Batuu you are given an opportunity to look over and decide which of the four build sets you would like yo choose from.

  • Peace and Justice
  • Power and Control
  • Elemental Nature
  • Protection and Defense

Once you have your selection the gatherers hand you a pin that you are to wear. This pin identifies your choice. I chose protection and defense. The gatherers will then call you inside the workshop where you meet the Kembe who leads your experience.

First on the agenda once inside and situated at your station you are given the opportunity to select your Kyber crystal. This is the color of your saber and what powers it. You are given the option of Red, Blue, Green, or Violet. You can buy different colors at Doc Ondar’s Den of Antiquities within Galaxy’s Edge.

After you have your crystal chosen it is time to build! The gathers will set out a tray of parts in front of you. You are given a hilt which you will enter you Kyber crystal into. There are sleeves, emitters, pommel caps, and activation plats that you will choose from to make your saber unique to you. The actual build is fairly easy once you select which pieces you want. If you have questions the gatherers are quick to respond and help as needed.

I do not want to ruin the whole experience for those that are interested but once you have your saber complete you step back and the gatherers will attach your hilt and blades. A very special someone will great those in attendance through the force. At the end everyone activates their lightsabers and raises them into the air. For a Star Wars fan its an incredibly cool experience to see and be a part of.

Overall, the expertise is roughly 15 minutes long. Given the price tag too I can see how many would not be eager to jump at the opportunity. I will say though if you have the means and are a big Star Wars fan this is an experience you will not want to miss. When you exit the experience you are also given a sheathe to carry your saber around the parks and keep it protected. Surely for $200 you don’t want to damage it. It is not easily breakable though, these are high quality and hefty lightsabers.

Building a lightsaber is definitely a highlight of my Walt Disney World Star Wars experiences. Its not something I would do again give the price but I also highly recommend it. I hope you get the chance to build one of your own soon!
