If you’ve ever looked into booking a cruise, you’ve likely noticed that Disney Cruise Line—especially one of their newest ships, the Disney Wish—comes with a higher price tag than many other lines. So what makes this ship different? Is it truly worth the cost compared to other cruise options like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, or Norwegian?
As someone who’s sailed the Disney Wish and cruised with multiple other lines, I’m breaking down what makes this ship and cruise line standout—and where other cruise lines might still shine.
Pricing & Value: The Premium Cruise Experience

The Disney Wish commands a premium price, no doubt about it. A 3- or 4-night cruise on the Wish can often cost more than a week on other major cruise lines. However, Disney’s pricing reflects what’s included: unlimited soda, rotational dining with the same dedicated servers, incredible character experiences, Broadway-quality shows, and family-focused activities all come bundled in your fare.
Contrast that with lines like Royal Caribbean or Carnival, where many extras — like specialty dining, beverage packages, and gratuities — add up quickly. So while you’re paying more upfront with Disney, you’re also getting a lot more all-inclusive entertainment and amenities that other lines charge extra for.
Verdict: Disney is more all-inclusive in some ways, but you’re paying a premium for the experience and the brand. Newer ships do tend to offer more overall compared to older ships for what is included in the cruise fare.
Staterooms: Thoughtful, Family-Friendly Comfort

The Wish’s staterooms offer clever design touches, like split bathrooms perfect for families, ample storage, and elegant Disney-themed details that feel upscale without being over the top. Concierge suites and family-sized staterooms provide plenty of options depending on your group size.
Many other cruise lines have roomy cabins too, but Disney’s attention to family comfort — combined with the magic touches like themed artwork and subtle storytelling — makes staying aboard the Wish a unique experience.
Verdict: Choose the cabin that you think will work best for you. Disney will have those themed touches but if you need the extra space go for it. As a solo cruiser, an interior was plenty sufficient for me,
Theming & Ship Design: A Floating Storybook

The Disney Wish is truly a work of art. From the moment you step into the Grand Hall, inspired by Cinderella’s Castle, you feel transported into a fairytale. Cast will tell you this ship was designed to be a castle at sea. It features over 1500 pieces of art throughout. The ship’s design and décor tell a story everywhere you go — whether it’s the shimmering AquaMouse water coaster that features an exclusive Mickey story to the Wish, or themed dining rooms like the Worlds of Marvel or Arendelle.
Other cruise lines take different approaches: Royal Caribbean emphasizes resort-style fun with rock climbing walls and skydiving simulators; Carnival offers a party atmosphere with bold colors and casual vibes; Celebrity and Norwegian focus more on sleek, modern luxury without heavy theming.
If you want a cruise ship that feels like a storybook come to life, the Wish is hard to beat.
Verdict: Disney wins on immersive theming and design—especially for families and Disney lovers. Other lines win on more of a resort style feel.
Dining: An Experience, Not Just a Meal

One of Disney Cruise Line’s signature features is rotational dining: you enjoy a different themed restaurant each night, with the same servers following you. On the Wish, that includes venues like Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, Worlds of Marvel, and the elegant 1923 restaurant celebrating Disney’s Golden Age.
Other lines usually have a main dining room plus buffets and specialty restaurants at an extra cost. While they offer variety, Disney’s dining stands out as part of the storytelling and entertainment.
If you want meals that double as immersive experiences, the Wish’s dining is unmatched. Sometimes that dining does come at a cost however. In Arendelle, viewing can be problematic. Tables on the outer edge or corners will suffer viewing the main show pieces.
Disney does also offer upscale luxury dining as well at an extra cost. From Palo Steakhouse to Enchante, there is something for everyone.
Verdict: Disney dining is an experience, not just a meal. But other lines win on sheer number of dining options with something for every appetite.
Entertainment & Activities: Broadway-Caliber Magic

Disney excels in live entertainment with shows like Disney Seas the Adventure and The Little Mermaid stage production on the Wish. And let’s not forget Pirate Night fireworks at sea—a Disney Cruise exclusive!
Other lines also put on impressive shows:
- Royal Caribbean: Ice shows, AquaTheater, and full-length productions
- Norwegian: Broadway musicals and comedy clubs
- Carnival: Playlist Productions and comedy nights
Verdict: If you love family-friendly, high-production Disney magic, the Wish and Disney deliver like no other. However, other cruise lines will have great entertainment as well. Royal Caribbean is especially known for bringing Broadway to life.
Kids & Family Spaces: The Ultimate Playground

Disney Cruise Line has long been praised for its kids’ clubs, and the Wish raises the bar even higher. The Oceaneer Club includes themed spaces like the Star Wars: Cargo Bay, Marvel Super Hero Academy, and Fairytale Hall where kids can immerse themselves in their favorite stories.
Teen and tween spaces are equally impressive, offering dedicated lounges and activities.
Other cruise lines offer kids’ programs, but few deliver the depth of storytelling and character interaction that Disney provides. Icon of the Seas may be the best non-Disney option for most diverse range of activities for kids and families.
Verdict: Disney takes the crown for families with young kids and tweens but may lack in the older kids area. Though, seeing those kids clubs, I did wish I was a kid again.
Adult-Only Options: Quiet, Classy, & Relaxing

While Disney is family-first, it still offers wonderful adult-only retreats like the Quiet Cove Pool, the elegant Senses Spa, and bars like Nightingale’s and The Rose. Lounges and bars will even be heavily themed to some of your favorite stories such as Hyperspace Lounge for the Star Wars fans.
Other cruise lines tend to have more nightlife, casinos, and late-night entertainment, which some adults prefer. But if your idea of adult-only time is classy relaxation rather than a party scene, Disney’s adult spaces may hit the mark.
Verdict: If you’re an adult looking for a quiet, classy experience, Disney delivers. For late-night fun, Carnival or Royal Caribbean might be a better fit. I never found myself bored on any ship I have been on thus far though.
Private Island Experience: Castaway Cay Magic

Sailing Disney means access to Castaway Cay or now Lookout Cay, widely regarded as one of the best private cruise islands with pristine beaches, watersports, and exclusive experiences. Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay and Carnival’s Half Moon Cay or Celebration Cay offer strong competition, but Castaway Cay remains a favorite for its charm and Disney-level service.
Verdict: Castaway Cay is a favorite for many, but other lines are catching up fast with upgraded island experiences. Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay do lack pool options whereas some other islands offer large pools with swim up bars and more.
Final Verdict: Is the Disney Wish Right for You?

If you’re a Disney fan or traveling with kids: The Disney Wish offers unparalleled magic and immersive experiences that help justify the price.
For couples or adults: Disney’s adult spaces are elegant but quieter; if you want more nightlife and less kids, consider other lines.
On a budget: There are great cruises on other lines for less money — but you won’t get the same storytelling or character-driven fun.
Planning Tip:
If you want to try the Wish but are unsure about the price, consider a 3-night sailing or off-peak dates. It’s a great way to experience the magic without the mega price tag.
