runDisney announced their summer virtual race series and for the 6th annual event it is theme to the Lion King!
For those unfamiliar with virtual races or runDisney, it was started back in 1994 with the Walt Disney World Marathon. Things have grown considerably since then and for the last six years runDisney has put on a virtual event series during the summer. The first series was themed to Mickey Mouse. Last year for the 5th anniversary it was Walt Disney World attractions. These races can be done anywhere and at anytime. There are no requirements other than signing up and paying the entry fee.
Those who do sign up will receive a medal or medals for the race or races they have signed up for. You will also be able to download a virtual race bib, start and finish lines, and mile markers. This summer series includes three 5K’s. If you sign up for all three with the virtual challenge you can then receive a challenge medal. In total with the challenge you will receive four medals.
For this race series each race is themed to different aspects of the Lion King franchise. The first medal is themed to the animated classic that started it all. The second medal is themed to the Broadway hit. The third medal is themed to the “live action” version and finally the challenge medal ties them all together with the famous Rafiki sketch of Simba.
Registration for this summer virtual series opens Thursday, April 8th at 10am EST. You can register on runDisney.com under the virtual series tab. Those signing up should make sure they have a Disney account and pack your patience as registration periods on runDisney.com can be slow.
