In conjunction with Earth Day 2021, Disney has announced that two new solar facilities will be coming to Walt Disney World resort to help power the resort.
Disney has been striving to use more and more renewable energy over time. Solar panels have been a big part of that push. New solar canopies are being installed at Disneyland Paris that will provide shelter 9,500 vehicles but of course also help power the resort. A new facility is also coming to Castaway Cay that will power roughly 70% of Castaway Cay. All of these facilities together would produce enough energy to power eight Magic Kingdom sized theme parks.
Walt Disney World has been using solar energy for a while now and has a giant not so hidden mickey shaped solar array built in collaboration with Reedy Creek Improvement District and Duke Energy. Two new 75MW solar facilities will come online within the next two years. When finished all of Walt Disney World’s solar facilities will be able to power up to 40% of its total annual energy consumption.
Other parks around the globe have installed solar systems on top of attractions and other buildings. Tokyo Disney Resort has enough solar power to fuel the iconic Dreamlights parade. Disney has set the goal of achieving net zero emissions for direct operations by 2030.
